4:30 am Pick up from Hotel The Huacarpay Lagoons located at 3020 m.a.s.l. 10,500 ft. are a wetland system located 30km south east of Cusco city, they have a great variety of aquatic habitats, therefore it is a refuge of diverse species of birds in danger of extinction. We will start this activity early in the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel and drive to this lake. Once we get there, we will explore around trying to spot many species, the marshy shores and lake waters are home to Andean waterfowl and wading birds, including the tufted grebe, puna ibis, puna teal, ruddy duck, ruddy (Andean) duck, plumbeous rake and Andean lapwing. In addition, there are usually a few non-breeding or migrating boreal shorebirds (quite a few later in the season). The extensive reed beds are home to black harriers, yellow-winged blackbirds, kinglet-like juncos, and the beautiful multicolored tyrant, and the scrub-covered slopes are home to a number of landbirds, such as the bare-faced turtle dove, the giant hummingbird (at nine inches, the largest body of hummingbirds), large flocks of greenish-yellow finches (usually), ash-breasted saw-finches, band-tailed seed-finches, and the endemic rusty-fronted canastero. Another Peruvian endemic, the spectacular Bearded Mountaineer, feeds on the yellow tubular flowers of the wild tobacco tree that grows in the alluvial plains near the lakes.
